WHY MIGHT DENTURES BECOME LOOSE?

Your dentures can become loose for a number of reasons, many of which are perfectly normal. The most common reasons are:

Bone resorption

Because your gums no longer need to keep your natural teeth in place, they may shrink.

How to prevent it

Use your jaw as much as possible. Chewing solid foods can help to keep your gums strong. A nutritionally balanced diet is also helpful.

Wear and tear

Dentures work hard. Over time, everyday wear and tear can degrade them.

How to prevent it

Practicing good oral and denture care and taking your dentures out at night will help to keep them, and your gums, in good shape for longer.

HOW CAN I TELL IF I’VE GOT LOOSE DENTURES?

There are a number of ways to tell if your dentures are coming loose. These are the most common:

  • You may find that they tend to slip and no longer fit snugly.
  • You may notice a clicking noise when you talk.
  • You may experience discomfort when wearing your dentures.
  • You may have problems eating.

If you notice any of these things happening with your dentures, it’s important that you see your dentist as soon as you can. They might advise you use a denture adhesive, or recommend that your dentures are repaired or replaced.
